DES MOINES, Iowa - A group of Iowans gathered Saturday, June 10th 2017 to celebrate World Refugee Day. This is the fourth annual event held in Des Moines and has been growing every year.
This event has allowed locals to learn about different cultures through food, dance and music. A variety of refugee service agencies from the area will be on hand to share the work they do.
The Soccer Tournament will be held on July 8th and will feature more than twelve teams and will take place throughout the day. The annual event is held each year in June by a collaboration of resettlement agencies, community based organizations, service providers, non-profits, employers, volunteers and community members.
For the second year, BAAI members were part of this event. The members were able to talk to different vendors and learn about their culture.
The event goers were able to see traditional Bosnian dance and hear our traditional "sevdah" music.
Gathering of this nature brings us all together to celebrate and welcome the new refugees who have arrived to Iowa in search for better life.
We are hoping to have a bigger turnout of Bosnian community in 2018. This is a great event for us to show our neighbors who we are, how we dance, how we sing and how great our food is.
